Review/Discussion: Shadow and Bone TV Show

Shadow and Bone (TV Series 2021– ) - IMDb

I have many many many thoughts.
There will be (minor) spoilers.

Let’s talk casting first:
Alina – Decent casting. Okay actress. Wasn’t blown away, didn’t hate either. I wasn’t a fan of Alina in the books and kind of expected the same for the show but I don’t hate her…yet…

Mal – I still don’t like Mal. The casting is good. He’s more likeable in the show for sure. I still don’t buy into Mal x Alina ships. *vom*

The Darkling – Perfection. Ben Barnes is everything. His performance was incredible. So dark, evil and manipulative. He did it so well. Ben Barnes really captures the essence of the Darkling. The name change though… Kirigan. No. Just no. I get that the Darkling gives away that he’s going to be the villain but still.

Zoya – Can I just say NO. I don’t like Zoya in the books at all. But her casting was just blehhh. I didn’t like her portrayal at all.

Genya – I like her but she was done DIRTY with that wig. What an attrocity.

Now for the Dregs:

Kaz – I liked the dude playing him. He could’ve been more sadistic/morally grey. I wanted a bit more, but I overall think he was good.

Jesper – PERFECTION OMG. Like just *chef kiss*
He was amazing. I loved the portrayal. Kit Young really captured Jesper’s character and charm. I loved it.

Inej – Almost perfect. Casting on point. However, she was too soft.

Nina – Great casting, I liked her portrayal.
I understand the sadness for the lack of plus size casting. It’s not really my place to comment on that aspect as I am not plus sized. It’s a shame they had an opportunity for rep taken.

Onto the story:

Firstly, what the fuck was that racism.
I found it so jarring. So unnecessary.
The show runners/makers adding diversity to the very white characters was amazing. Adding the racism, not so much. Right from the first few minutes too.
I’m super sick of fantasy worlds having racism, like it’s fantasy. The world can be anything and yet they always have racism, sexism etc. etc.
I’m not Asian so I will not commented on the use of slurs towards them, as it’s not my place. However, the ‘half breed’ slur hit me. It took me out of the story for a moment. So so gross. I don’t even know what to say. *shudder* This is not the representation mixed people want!

*deep breath*
Let’s move on.

It was an interesting decision to combine the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. I’m not really sure what to make of that aspect. It kind of worked and didn’t work for me all at the same time.

It’s no secret that I prefer Six of Crows (doesn’t everyone?) to the Shadow and Bone trilogy, I couldn’t help but be a bit more interested in the Dregs than Alina and Mal. However, I was very interested in the Darkling. Man, I wish he had more air time because *swoon*.

The story was engaging and definitely binge-worthy. I watched it over two days, but if I’d had the time I would’ve binged it in a day. I was gripped from episode one all the way to the end. I don’t think there was a bad episode. They were all really (surprisingly) good.

I had low expectations going in. I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I think I actually enjoyed this more than the books. I enjoyed Shadow and Bone, the first book, but the series went downhill from there for me. I’m excited for the potential second season of the show. (PLEASE NETFLIX) Obviously, I know where the story goes. I’m interested to see what changes they make and how the Dregs will slot into the story still…

Nina and Matthias’ story was odd, I get that’s their back story but it makes absolutely no sense to the people who’ve not read the books. I like Nina, but I feel like this could’ve been cut. It would’ve been better to have those scenes as flashbacks when Nina and Matthias have an actual part of the Six of Crow timeline.

The main problem I had (aside from the racism) was that it seemed a tad rushed. Everything seemed to happen too fast. I like fast pace, but I feel like there were areas that could’ve been a bit more developed. Such as Alina ‘training’ – that barely seemed to happen. Baghra was barely in the show. I don’t know, maybe it’s me. I feel like they could’ve added in an extra 2 episodes to develop certain parts more.

Will I watch Season Two: Hell yes!
Rating: 4/5 Stars

5) Scott and Stiles
(Teen Wolf)

I hardly ever mention TV shows on here, so I thought I’d throw in one of my fave friendships from a TV. Teen Wolf!! One of my favourite shows. I’m currently rewatching the whole show, which is why this sprang to mind instantly.
The best part of the show: Scott and Stiles. I bloody adore their friendship that is so close they’re basically brothers. It’s such a lovely genuine friendship, they bounce off each other and always look out for each other. I miss this show!!

4) Dorian, Chaol + Celaena/Aelin
(Throne of Glass)

I love the ToG series, one of the best parts of the beginning of the series is Dorian, Chaol and Celaena. I love the OG ToG gang. It’s what I missed most in the later books was their interaction. The reunion in KoA is beautiful though. That book made me full on sob so many times!

3) Kelsier and his crew
(Mistborn)

I love Kelsier and his crew! I love it when Kelsier takes Vin in and makes her part of his crew. Their friendship is so lovely! I really want to reread the books so I can see the gang again. (And have my heart ripped out again, evidently)

2) Cinder + The gang
(The Lunar Chronicles)

A recent favourite of mine, after reading The Lunar Chronicles this year I just had include the whole gang! I love their friendship and interactions. I particularly love Thorne and Cinder, I love their banter. Basically, Thorne with anyone, he’s hilarious and my fave!

1) Hiccup and Toothless
(How To Train Your Dragon)

Is there anything more beautiful than friendship between human/pet?! Especially dragons! I bloody adore this film series, so sad it ended. I will forever love Hiccup and Toothless, what a beautiful friendship. *sheds a tear*

top5weds
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Characters I’d Cosplay As

I am finally back with another T5W post, I skipped the last two weeks as I couldn’t think of anything for the topics. However, this week I absolutely had to do this topic, especially as it is Halloween!

5) Blue Sargent – The Raven CycleImage result for blue sargentArt source

The way Blue’s style is described is just cool and quirky, I love her individualism.
Also, the fanart of her! The artists really capture how I imagine Blue’s quirkiness and style.  I just want her outfits.

4) Daenerys Targaryen – GoT/ASOIAF

In both the books and show Daenerys has amazing clothes and I just want to pretend to be her for a second, okay? I want fancy dresses and dragons.

3) Feyre – ACOTAR

Feyre clearly has an amazing wardrobe. I need it.
From the Starfall dress to the Illyrian wings, I would love the rock a Feyre cosplay.

2) Elektra – Daredevil (TV show)

I just love this character, she’s one of my favourites from the show. Her comic book outfit is cool too but I fell in love with the character on the show. She’s such a lovable sociopathic, badass woman. I live for it.

1) Princess Leia Organa

Of course, I’d love to cosplay as my favourite character ever. Other than the fact I’d love to be Princess Leia, her outfits are amazing. She’s iconic. Need I say more?

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Favourite Villains

*This is going to be a combination of book and film characters*

1) Victor Vale – Vicious + Vengeful by V.E. Schwab

Image result for vicious ve schwab new cover

A new favourite of mine! Having recently read Vicious and Vengeful by V.E Schwab, I fell in love with Victor Vale. He’s such a cool character and as the series name Villains suggests, it’s all about villains!

2) Cersei Lannister – A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin/ Game of Thrones

Image result for cersei gif

I know everyone hates Cersei but I love her? She’s such a complex and interesting character. Lena Headey plays her SO well in the show. She’s so underrated.

3) Loki – MCU

Related image
Love of my love, Loki. Need I say more? He’s just amazing. By far my favourite MCU character. Would love to see a Loki solo film.

4) Magneto – X-Men

I love a villain with a tragic backstory and who’s a bit misguided. I can totally see from Eric’s point of view and I totally sympathise with him.
Also, Michael Fassbender? Hello.

5) Darth Vader – Star Wars

giphy

For me, no other villain has ever compared to Darth Vader. He has such a presence about him, that remains unmatched. He just has something other villains don’t, it’s hard to explain but he’s definitely my all-time favourite and always will be.

Book vs Adaptation · TV/Film

Better Than The Book!? | Thoughts on BBC Pride and Prejudice

pride-and-prejudice-banner.png

1) Faithful Adaptation

Like with all book adaptations they had to cut some of the book’s story out. With this, I feel it stuck to the book really well but cut out the unnecessary and boring parts – which made it more enjoyable for me, personally. There were many parts of the book I found myself getting fed up with reading, I ended up liking the adaptation much more!

2) Visually Pleasing

Aka aesthetic. I’m not a historian, I don’t know exactly what things would’ve looked like in this time period. The thing I struggle with, with classics (and historical fiction) is visualising how it’s supposed to look. Which brings me onto the next point…

3) It’s Historically Accurate

Again, I’m no historian but I did watch the 2005 Pride and Prejudice adaptation after this and couldn’t help noticing how different the costumes were. I did a bit of research and found the costumes in the mini-series were inspired by actual fashion from the time the book was written. I found on Frock Flicks they showed the inspiration behind the costuming, it’s a really interesting read if you’re like me and love the costumes in period dramas.

4) It was actually gripping

I ended up binge-watching the first 4 episodes, I would’ve watched them all if it hadn’t have been late! I really wanted to keep watching, I struggled to focus whilst reading the book and it was easy to put down for long periods of time.

5) AMAZING Casting

I think every character was perfectly cast and did a great job of bringing the characters to life. Everyone just fitted their part so well, it was really well done and I wouldn’t change any of them.
Obviously, Colin Firth steals the show, I mean look at him!?
