Most Disappointing Reads of 2018| Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Most Disappointing Reads 2018

I read a lot of disappointing books in 2018. It wasn’t the best reading year for me, quality wise. Sadly.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Image result for wuthering heights emily bronte

After reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and everyone hyping Wuthering Heights, I for sure thought I would love this. I never expected to hate it. But I do. I literally hate this book and it was the biggest disappointment. It was boring. Dull. Worst characters ever. I don’t understand the praise. It’s literal trash.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

34728667

Okay, so I talked about this one last week because I’m not excited for the sequel.
This was such a disappointment, I cannot even express. It was so overhyped. I was expecting to fall in love with this and have a new favourite book after all the rave reviews. But, no. It was so mediocre.
Beyond overhyped.

The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic

17259690

Another book I expect to love and severely disappointed me. It has amazing reviews and ratings. It’s even compared to Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle. All I can say is how dare anyone compare this utter trash with the masterpiece that is The Raven Cycle. Maggie Stiefvater’s writing is literal art. The writing in this is horrendous, the characters are horrendous, the plot is horrendously boring. There’s nothing to like??
Just no. Seriously. NO.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

30724132

This wasn’t a bad book. But I didn’t love it. I couldn’t really get into it. I sounded like something I’d really love but I don’t think the execution was what I expected/wanted.
It’s a cute book. A little too cheesy for me. I can see why people love it.
I was just disappointed

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas

36048256

It actually pains me to have to put a SJM book on my disappointing reads list. *cries*

But this just. No. SJM. I’m sorry. I didn’t love it.
It was so mediocre and cringy. SOOO disappointing. I wanted to love it, I really did.
It’s really boring and I am sick of Feyre’s perspective. I loved reading from the others’ perspective, I wish the whole novel excluded Feyre’s POV and was just from everyone else’s. She just beyond annoying at this point. *sigh*

Hyped 2019 Releases I Don’t Care About| Top 5 Wednesday

This week’s topic is:  Hyped 2019 Releases You Don’t Care About

Time to throw some shade.Image result for throw shade gif

1) Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

I read the first book last year, early as I had an ARC but I was just underwhelmed. I literally couldn’t care less about the characters and the story was just slow and boring?? I honestly didn’t see the hype at all. I did plan to continue the series, still might, but I just don’t care about it at all.

2) The Everlasting Rose by Dhonielle Clayton

39080472

Similar to what I said above, got an ARC of this, was underwhelmed. I have since forgotten every single thing that happened. It was completely unmemorable. Before I read the first book I thought it had interesting concepts but the execution fell flat.
I was bored throughout the first book and I definitely won’t be continuing this series any time soon, if ever.

3) Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

17699853

Oh look Cassandra Clare’s release another Shadowhunter’s series. I never bothered reading The Mortal Instruments series, it just doesn’t interest me at all. But every time Cassandra Clare releases a book there’s so much hype, it’s unavoidable. Another Shadowhunters series though?? Really?? Don’t care.

This sentiment basically applies to all things Cassandra Clare though. I just do not care.
Sorry, not sorry.

4) The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston

Okay, so no shade to this one. I just didn’t really enjoy Geekerella by the same author so I’m not really excited about this one. Geekerella was just okay, in my opinion. I may pick this one up in the future but I’m in no rush to read it.

5) Superman: Dawnbreaker by Matt de la Pena

No shade to this one either. I’m not the biggest DC fan, I really liked the Wonder Woman film; that’s about it. I read Catwoman: Soulstealer because SJM. But Superman? Just boring to me. I didn’t read the Batman book or Wonder Woman. I just have zero interest in Superman or Batman so I won’t be picking those up. I *might* read Wonder Woman one day but who knows.

Books I Didn’t Read in 2018| Top 5 Wednesday

top5weds
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Books You Didn’t Get to in 2018

Some of these I really wanted to read this month but I’ve been in a reading slump all month. It’s been hell. Hopefully, it won’t continue into 2019.

Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Image result for obsidio by jay kristoff & amie kaufman

I read Illuminae back in 2016 and Gemina in 2017 and I just completely forgot to pick this book up. I have forgotten most of the first two books, so I need to reread before getting to this in 2019. I’m currently rereading Illuminae but it’s taking forever since I’m in a slump. I’m hoping it’ll get me out of it!

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

38525180

I was really hoping to get to this, this month! But Alas, the reading slump killed all my motivation. I didn’t want it to hinder my reading so I decided not to pick this up in case it made me hate it!

The Dark Vault by V.E. Schwab

41564017

Same reason as above. I was really looking forward to this. Guess I’ll try in Jan. *Sobs*

The Silver Queen by Josie Jaffrey

42088730
Again, the slump ruined me and didn’t get to pick this up. I really want to pick this up soon but we’ll see!

Most Anticipated 2019 Book Releases | Top 5 Wednesday

top5weds

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is:  Most Anticipated 2019 Releases

I have so many anticipated releases, but for this post, I decided to stick to ones for the first half of the year.

Chrysalis by Brendan Reichs (March 2019)

Image result for chrysalis book brendan reichs

I was searching GoodReads for ideas to add to this list and this came up. I had completely forgotten about this! I really enjoyed the first two books and I cannot wait to see where this series goes. I believe this is the last book, so it’ll be nice to complete a series for once. I am forever starting new series!

The Wicked King by Holly Black (January 2019)
Image result for the wicked king cover
Despite the fact, I have mostly forgotten The Cruel Prince, I am still excited to read this. I remember really enjoying the first book and wanting to continue, think I’ll need a recap before picking this up. Regardless, I’m excited to get back into this world, hopefully, this book will be even better than the first. I have heard nothing but good things from those who are lucky enough to have read it already!

Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray (April 2019)
Image result for master and apprentice book
I have read a few of the new canon Star Wars books, the best/my favourites have been by Claudia Gray, so when I heard she was releasing another one I was so hyped!
I’m not a huge fan of the prequels, (the originals are just the best ok), but I do like Obi Wan and I’d like to see more Qui Gon.

Queenslayer by Sebastien de Castell (May 2019)

Image result for spellslinger by sebastien de castell

If you’ve been reading my blog for while or follow me on Instagram or Twitter (shameless plug, I know) then you know I’ve been raving about the Spellslinger series by Sebastien De Castell, it has quickly become one of my favourites. I cannot wait for this next book in the series. I am desperate for more Kellen and Reichis!

Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (May 2019)

Image result for Aurora Rising: The Aurora Cycle 1

I loved Illuminae and Gemina by these two!
(I still haven’t read Obsidio, who even am I?! Currently rereading Illuminae and then Gemina and I’ll finally finish the trilogy)
I AM HYPED FOR THIS. That cover. So beautiful. I really want to read more sci-fi so this is just perfect for me.

What are some of your anticipated 2019 releases?

Book Gift Guide for YA Fantasy Lovers | Top 5 Wednesday

top5weds
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Books to Give _____ as Gifts
(Create a recommendations guide for a person)
I chose to do a list for YA Fantasy Lovers!

1) Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas – Collectors Edition

Image result for Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas Collector's Edition

Both the UK and the US editions are gorgeous, however,  I got the US edition with the slipcase because I wanted a slipcase, it feels more special to me. Maybe I’m weird. (lol)
Throne of Glass is a great fantasy series, what better gift to give a YA Fantasy lover than this stunning collector’s edition!

2) Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows: Collector's Edition: Book 1 - Six of Crows (Hardback)

Another gorgeous collector’s edition. But honestly, who wouldn’t want this? It’s freaking beautiful. The cover. The red sprayed pages. Ugh.
This would make a great gift for someone who loves YA Fantasy with morally grey/misfits as characters. It such a cool duology, the characters are just everything, definitely worth a read!

3) Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

Image result for mistborn box set

This would be a great present for a YA fantasy lover who wants to get into more adult fantasy books. The Mistborn Trilogy would be a great transition series as it is adult but feels a bit YA too. It’s a really good starting place for adult fantasy!
(Plus, the covers are beautiful!)

4) Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

For the Urban Fantasy lover, this trilogy would be perfect! It’s such a cute story with cool creatures and worlds but set in the familiar place of our own world.
I never thought I’d like the whole angel/demon thing, but this unique take + Laini Taylor’s beautiful writing was just amazing.

5) Spellslinger by Sebastien De CastellImage result for sebastien de castell books

This unique western-style fantasy is just an abundance of fun! The humour is amazing, the characters are so likeable; everything is just great.
This series is such a joy to read, the books actually made me laugh out loud.
The covers are gorgeous too! (If you buy the paperbacks they have sprayed edges)

Book Wish List (aka books I desperately need) | Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Book Wish List

Six of Crows Collectors Edition by Leigh Bardugo

This is just so beautiful. Look it at. It even has red sprayed pages??!! So beautiful.
So many collectors editions of books I love have just come out.
Maybe, I’ll be lucky enough to get this for Christmas. (Please Santa)

Graceling 10th Anniversary Edition by Kristin Cashore

Image result for Graceling

Graceling was one of the first YA series I read because of the online book community, it will forever have a special place in my heart. It’s its 10 year anniversary and they release this beautiful edition of it. Which I desperately need.

Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy

I love Star Wars, especially the Star Wars ladies. The illustrations look so beautiful, from what I’ve seen, I really, really need to pick this up. I love learning anything and everything I can about Star Wars so this is definitely a must for me!

Fire and Blood by George RR Martin

Image result for george rr martin fire and blood

GRRM has finally released a book relating to ASOIAF. It’s no Winds of Winter… unfortunately. BUT IT WILL DO. I love House Targaryen so I cannot wait to learn more about their history. It’s a pretty thick book and it has illustrations!! Excited!

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This has been on my TBR ever since it was announced, yet I do not own it yet. I have no idea why I haven’t read and bought this (and its sequel) but I just haven’t. I seriously need to, it sounds amazing. Everyone raves about it and I know I’ll love it too.

Characters I’d Want at Friendsgiving!| Top 5 Wednesday

top5weds
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Characters You’d Want at Friendsgiving

I’m British, so we don’t have Thanksgiving but I’d love a Friendsgiving!
Here are the characters I’d love to have at a Friendsgiving:

1) Princess Leia – Star Warsleia

Being my favourite fictional character of all time, I’d obviously love to be friends with Leia. Having her at Friendsgiving would definitely assure no dull moments!

2)  Apollo – The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan

Image result for apollo the trials of apolloSource

Apollo is so amusing and ridiculous that I’d love to have him as a friend and invite him to Friendsgiving as he would definitely make me laugh. (+ plus music and poetry so entertainment for all)

3) Ferius Parfax – SpellSlinger by Sebastien De Castell

Image result for spellslinger
Ferius is such an awesome character! I’d love to sit and talk to her for hours, I feel like she’d have tons of cool stories to share.

4) Loki – MCU

Image result for loki gif

Do I need a reason to want to be friends with Loki?! He’s fucking Loki.
I’d invite him to Friendsgiving, not only so I could dreamily stare at him, but also because Loki definitely needs a friend.
He can take over my world any time.

5) Literally everyone from Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

Image result for throne of glass charlie bowater
Source: Charlie Bowater

So, I’m kinda cheating with this one but if I didn’t lump them together this list would’ve been all SJM characters. (Haha)
I’d so love to be apart of Aelin’s court + friend group; how amazing would that be?!
The banter, interactions, and genuine love between these characters is just amazing and I’m envious of their close friendships.

In no particular order:

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

38525180

After reading Strange the Dreamer, I am excited to get into this book! I adore Laini’s writing and I’m sure I’m going to love it!

The Silver Queen by Josie Jaffrey

42088730

The first book of this series surprised me, I really enjoyed it. I cannot wait to dive back into this world to see what happens next, the first did leave off on a bit of a cliffhanger!

Skyward by Brandon Sanderson

36642458

Brandon Sanderson?? Need I say more? He’s one of my favourite authors and I adore his books. I love sci-fi and I cannot wait to read this!

The Girl King by Mimi Yu

41832496
I was so so lucky to be sent an ARC of this; so I definitely want to get to this before it comes out in January. It sounds so good and the cover is beautiful!

The Dark Vault by V.E Schwab

41564017

After reading V.E. Schwab for the first time this year I am looking forward to reading more of her work! I loved Vicious and I’m sure The Dark Vault will be great as well. I was lucky enough to be asked to review this and I couldn’t say no after reading Vicious and Vengeful – they were so good!

Largest Books on My TBR | Top 5 Wednesday

top5weds
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Largest Books on TBR

Surprisingly, I don’t have many big books on my TBR. I was going to make this list all the books over 500 pages from my owned TBR but it turns out; I don’t have enough. hahaha
I’m not one to shy away from big books so, I’m actually a bit shocked. I kept the books as near to 500 pages as I could find.

Starting with the largest:

1) The Dark Vault by V.E. Schwab – 697 pages

Image result for The Dark Vault: Unlock the Archive
This will actually be my next read! I’m so excited to read more VE Schwab after reading her Villains duology! This is technically two books but it’s a bind up so it’s pretty big!

2) Muse of Nightmares By Laini Taylor – 514 pages

Image result for muse of nightmares
Hopefully, I’ll get to this soon. I enjoyed Strange the Dreamer even though it was slow and took me ages to read. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this so I can’t wait to read it!

3) Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell – 529 pages

Image result for cloud atlas book cover

This has been on my TBR for a while. It’s pretty big but the font is SO tiny; I always put off reading it for that reason. It sounds good but confusing and I’ve heard mixed things about it. No idea when I’ll get around to picking this up.

4) Magnus Chase The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan 497 pages

15724396
I meant to read this back in the summer, I feel like it would be best read then; since summer is literally in the title. *Hopefully* I will pick it up next spring/summer.

5) The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani – 488 pages

42080479
This is a fairly recent addition to my TBR but I am hoping to get to this soon; when I’m next in the mood for a middle grade/ light-hearted read. I’ve heard good things about this series and I’m excited to start it!

Have you read any of these books? Let me know what you think if you have!

Also, let me know the biggest book on your TBR!

Characters I’d Love To Cosplay As | Top 5 Wednesday

top5weds
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme, GoodReads group here with all the topics + discussion!
This week’s topic is: Characters I’d Cosplay As

I am finally back with another T5W post, I skipped the last two weeks as I couldn’t think of anything for the topics. However, this week I absolutely had to do this topic, especially as it is Halloween!

5) Blue Sargent – The Raven CycleImage result for blue sargentArt source

The way Blue’s style is described is just cool and quirky, I love her individualism.
Also, the fanart of her! The artists really capture how I imagine Blue’s quirkiness and style.  I just want her outfits.

4) Daenerys Targaryen – GoT/ASOIAF
Image result for daenerys outfits art
Art source

In both the books and show Daenerys has amazing clothes and I just want to pretend to be her for a second, okay? I want fancy dresses and dragons.

3) Feyre – ACOTAR
Image result for feyre charlie bowaterArt source

Feyre clearly has an amazing wardrobe. I need it.
From the Starfall dress to the Illyrian wings, I would love the rock a Feyre cosplay.

2) Elektra – Daredevil (TV show)

Image result for elektra daredevil tv outfit
I just love this character, she’s one of my favourites from the show. Her comic book outfit is cool too but I fell in love with the character on the show. She’s such a lovable sociopathic, badass woman. I live for it.

1) Princess Leia Organa

Image result for princess leia

Of course, I’d love to cosplay as my favourite character ever. Other than the fact I’d love to be Princess Leia, her outfits are amazing. She’s iconic. Need I say more?
