Monthly Wrap Up + Currently Reading| September 2019

Hey guys!

September was a really slow month for me and ended up being a really bad reading month, unfortunately. 😦

I’ve been struggling with a reading slump since August and my mental health hasn’t been great. I only managed to read two books this month:

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This took a loooong time to get through but I ended up really enjoying it. It takes some getting used to the writing style/format but the story is good.

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

This was INCREDIBLE. This was sooo much better than Nevernight, which I did enjoy but this took it to the next level! I loved the setting and the pace of this one so much more.

Currently Reading:

Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff
After THAT ending in Godsgrave, I obviously had to pick up this.

Teenage Writings by Jane Austen
This is for a class. I’m doing a module on Jane Austen this semester so prepare for lots of her books to be appearing on my blog!

+ I need to read The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis ASAP.

Review: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

2019-09-27 02.40.02 1.jpg

Synopsis:
Mia Corvere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.
Destined to destroy empires, the child raised in shadows made a promise on the day she lost everything: to avenge herself on those that shattered her world.
But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, and Mia must become a weapon without equal. Before she seeks vengeance, she must seek training among the infamous assassins of the Red Church of Itreya.
Inside the Church’s halls, Mia must prove herself against the deadliest of opponents and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and daemons at the heart of a murder cult.
The Church is no ordinary school. But Mia is no ordinary student.
The Red Church is no ordinary school, but Mia is no ordinary student.
The shadows love her.
And they drink her fear

My Thoughts:

When I first started this, I was like what the hell is this? Why are there footnotes? Why is everything so slow? It took me a LONG time to get into this, but I really wanted to see why everyone loved this book/series so much. I’m going to be honest: I almost DNF’d this book because of its slow start. BUT I am so glad I didn’t. I ended up really enjoying this book, despite it being a slower pace to my taste. Side note – I was also in a reading slump, which could’ve hindered my enjoyment a little.

The writing style is quite overwhelming – There’s A LOT of flowery, long sentences and repetition. One of the reasons I found this book to be slow was because it was dragged out a lot. I feel like it could’ve been said in literally half the words. That being said, it isn’t a bad thing per se, it completely depends on personal taste. At first, I thought I hated it, but it grew on me and bothered me less and less as time went on.
The footnotes on the other hand: annoyed the hell out of me. I honestly don’t see the point. I feel like they’re there for worldbuilding purposes only, but it feels kind of lazy to put them in footnotes rather than the story itself? This is the first time I’ve ever read a fantasy with footnotes and it is kind of jarring. The only books I’ve really read with footnotes are classics/books for uni – it’s not something I enjoy in reading. I’m not sure I can get used to the footnotes, I read them, but I’m not a fan. I’m not even sure the information was that important in the footnotes of Nevernight, I honestly don’t remember them.

I do really love assassins – this is kind of like the adult, graphic extreme version of Throne of Glass. Or at least I hoped ToG would have more assassin qualities, I still loved that series, but it sold as a completely different story to what it is. Anyways…  Most of this story follows an assassin school/trial/competition setting – which is cool. I know a lot of people love a school setting in fantasy, it’s not one of my favourite settings but I did like it in this instance.

Characters:
Mia:  I loved Mia. I loved her character, her development, her everything. She was a great main character, she had such great development and story. It took me a while to get attached but by the end of the book I was fully invested in her character and story arc, I knew I’d be finishing this series! I NEED to know what happens. I’m loving her journey and cannot wait to get to Godsgrave.

Tric: MY LOVE TRIC!! God, I love him. He’s such a great character and him + Mia are just amazing. I loved their interactions with each other (+others).
Tric was seriously the highlight of this novel, especially through the slow parts. I instantly took to his character; he is one of the main reasons I kept reading.

Mr Kindly: Shadow cat thing. I love an animal sidekick/companion and he didn’t disappoint. I cannot wait to learn more about Mr Kindly. He’s super intriguing!

WWW-Wednesday

Happy Wednesday!
Sorry I’ve been SO inactive. Having no wifi is horrendous in general but especially as a blogger! I’m going to try and schedule as many posts as I can as I start uni soon.
But I’m back with another WWW Wednesday!

This tag/meme is hosted on Taking on a World of Words. It’s a super simple meme, you just answered the three W questions.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
Recently Finished:

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

Image result for godsgrave uk paperback

I finally finished Godsgrave! I can get to the final book at last and complete the series!!
I am in such a bad reading slump. These books are taking me ages to get through but I’m enjoying them regardless. Godsgrave was better than Nevernight – which started too slow for my liking. This book was faster paced and more exciting. I LOVED the setting so much, it was so cool to experience.
Full review coming soon!

Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff

The cliffhanger Godsgrave ended on was BRUTAL. I am so glad this book was waiting next to me. I IMMEDIATELY picked up this book after Godsgrave. I HAD to know what happened next. I am hoping my reading slump has finally gone since I’m actually excited about reading again. Will Darkdawn beat Godsgrave?! I’m dying to find out how it all ends. Hopefully, I won’t be disappointed.

Reading Next:

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Uni starts next week so I need to get a move on with my required reading!
I’m doing a whole lot of Jane Austen this semester so she will be appearing in a lot of WWW Wednesdays/Wrap up and potentially reviews!
I’ll probably be switching between audiobook and physical book for this.
PS. How beautiful is this edition of S&S?! All my JA books are the Arcturus editions – they are seriously beautiful.

I moved to uni on Sunday and my place still doesn’t have Wifi 😦 It’s been such a pain.
I’ve currently gone back home just to use wifi, luckily, my mum’s isn’t super far from my uni flat.

I’ve been super busy packing for uni and moving into my new place that I haven’t been reading at all. My insomnia has been really bad lately, too. I can’t read as much when my insomnia is playing up as my concentration isn’t good.
Reading Next:
I’ll probably read Godsgrave then Darkdawn next. I am actually getting into Nevernight and enjoying it now, it took me a while but I’m getting there! I’m sure after I’m done I’ll want to pick up the next two and binge the series.

Review: Obisido by Amie Kaufman + Jay Kristoff (The Illuminae Files #3) | OVERHYPED

*This review is spoiler-free but there may be spoilers for book 1 and 2*

Synopsis:

Kady, Ezra, Hanna and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza–but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys–an old flame from Asha’s past–reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.

My Thoughts:
I had way too high expectations for this book. I thought each book in this series would get better and better, as I liked Gemina more than Illuminae. However, I found this pretty disappointing. It was by no means bad, it just wasn’t mind-blowing or amazing.

The plot – I find this to be slower-paced than the first two, I found myself bored and waiting for something good to happen. I basically force myself through most of it, it was uninteresting, I wanted to know what happened; it just dragged a lot. I wanted so much more but I think my expectations were just too high.

A lot of the plot is recycled from the previous two, it was very repetitive and predictable. So very predictable. I think that was the most disappointing part, was just knowing what was going to happen and how everything would wrap up. I wanted to be mind-blow and on edge but I wasn’t for most of it. The second half definitely gets better, it picked up a bit, not much, but enough for me to get more invested.

The story takes place after the events of Gemina, so we follow all the characters from the previous books as well as a few new characters on Kerenza.
I have to say; I much preferred reading about the ‘old’ characters. I found myself wanting to get to their parts rather than read about the new characters on Kerenza. I really didn’t feel connected to these characters, like I did with the previous ones.
Asha and Rhys were just a bit bland, in my opinion.

I still really love the formatting/ layout of the book. It is such a cool and interesting way to consume a story and I think it works really well for a sci-fi novel. The drawings/ illustrations were really nicely done, as in the previous novels.

Characters:

Kady & Ezra: I loved seeing the main characters from Illuminae. Kady was always a favourite of mine, Ezra is okay. I liked following her character again.

Hanna & Nik: Again, I loved seeing these guys! They’re probably my favourites from the whole series, with the addition of Ella, I love her too!

Asha & Rhys: Meh. Didn’t really get attached to these two. I didn’t connect with them and I wasn’t really invested in their characters or story.

AIDAN: Why is a murderous, psycho AI system so entertaining? Literally one of the best parts of the whole series and especially this book. I love AIDAN. He’s creepy and interesting.

Six of Crows Collectors Edition by Leigh Bardugo

This is just so beautiful. Look it at. It even has red sprayed pages??!! So beautiful.
So many collectors editions of books I love have just come out.
Maybe, I’ll be lucky enough to get this for Christmas. (Please Santa)

Graceling 10th Anniversary Edition by Kristin Cashore

Image result for Graceling

Graceling was one of the first YA series I read because of the online book community, it will forever have a special place in my heart. It’s its 10 year anniversary and they release this beautiful edition of it. Which I desperately need.

Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy

I love Star Wars, especially the Star Wars ladies. The illustrations look so beautiful, from what I’ve seen, I really, really need to pick this up. I love learning anything and everything I can about Star Wars so this is definitely a must for me!

Fire and Blood by George RR Martin

GRRM has finally released a book relating to ASOIAF. It’s no Winds of Winter… unfortunately. BUT IT WILL DO. I love House Targaryen so I cannot wait to learn more about their history. It’s a pretty thick book and it has illustrations!! Excited!

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This has been on my TBR ever since it was announced, yet I do not own it yet. I have no idea why I haven’t read and bought this (and its sequel) but I just haven’t. I seriously need to, it sounds amazing. Everyone raves about it and I know I’ll love it too.
