Binge-Worthy YA Books! #1

Hey guys! Happy Saturday 🙂
I have been doing a lot of reviews lately since I’ve been in uni I pre-wrote a lot of posts before I started and most of them were reviews; I thought I’d change it up today.
I finally had a little time to write so I thought I’d give some recommendations!

If I have reviews for any of the books mentioned they’ll be linked! If you click on the title it will take you to the Goodreads page of the first book so you can read the synopsis if you’d like.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas

Now all the books are out in the Throne of Glass series, it would be a perfect time to binge them. SJM is a master at addictive writing and creating great characters that you are instantly invested in.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

2018-10-27 02.24.29 1.jpg

Her beautiful writing style is just a dream to read. The characters are so relatable and flawed but you just love them? The friendship between all the character is just lovely and makes you wish you were part of the gang.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

2018-10-27 02.24.28 1.jpg

Laini Taylor’s beautiful lyrical and descriptive writing style is so unique and amazing, it’s an absolute dream to read. I flew through these books, they’re addictive and the characters are just great. This is probably the only time I’ve enjoyed insta-love and heavy romance. I was rooting for the relationships from start to finish.

Review of the whole series

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

2018-10-27 02.24.26 1.jpg

Underrated series! I love the world in these books, it’s such a cool concept and I wish there were more. Each book is a standalone kinda, but they all fit together and are brought together in book 3.  Hardly anyone talks about these books anymore but they’re so cool and definitely worth a read!

Spellslinger by Sebastien De Castell

2018-10-27 02.24.25 1.jpg

This is such a fun series, I cannot rave enough about these books!
I listened to the first two on audiobook, which was an amazing experience; the narrator is SO good at doing the voices. It was like a full-on performance, I highly recommend the audiobooks, if you’re looking for a new one! I was lucky enough to get books 3 + 4 as ARCs! I have reviews for these which I will link:

Series Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone By Laini Taylor (Spoiler Free!)

“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”

Synopsis of the first book:
“Errand requiring immediate attention. Come.

The note was on vellum, pierced by the talons of the almost-crow that delivered it. Karou read the message. ‘He never says please’, she sighed, but she gathered up her things.
When Brimstone called, she always came.”

In general, Karou has managed to keep her two lives in balance. On the one hand, she’s a seventeen-year-old art student in Prague; on the other, errand-girl to a monstrous creature who is the closest thing she has to family. Raised half in our world, half in ‘Elsewhere’, she has never understood Brimstone’s dark work – buying teeth from hunters and murderers – nor how she came into his keeping. She is a secret even to herself, plagued by the sensation that she isn’t whole.

Now the doors to Elsewhere are closing, and Karou must choose between the safety of her human life and the dangers of a war-ravaged world that may hold the answers she has always sought.

Let me just start off by saying; Laini Taylor’s writing is just beautiful. I love her writing so much, I cannot wait to read more from her.

The first book follows Karou, she runs errands for her chimaera family, she collects teeth for them, she knows nothing about who she is or where she came from. Her life turns upside down when the portals she uses to get to her chimaera family are destroyed, she has no way of accessing her family who raised her.
I really like the story of the ‘devils’ (chimaera) not really being the bad ones, it’s a really unique twist on the typical angels and devils stories.

The first book is basically Karou finding out more about herself and the family who raised her. The second book continues the journey of Karou embracing her heritage and her people and the war between the chimaera and angels is blossoming. (You get to see more or Eretz, the chimaera/angel world in this book, whereas the first is set in our world)
The third book is the conclusion, summing up everything, it’s hard to explain the third book without spoilers! However, the third book introduces a new character and I wasn’t overly keen at first, but it was wrapped up fairly well. Though I have to say the third book was my least favourite.

–  She’s super cool art student with blue hair and tattoos raised by chimaeras. I love Karou, I really enjoyed her character and her chimaera ‘family’.
Akiva –  He’s an angel, his people are at war with the chimaeras. He is Karou’s forbidden love interest. I ship these two so bad, they’re so cute.
Zuzana – She is a tiny badass and Karou’s best friend. I love Zuzana and Karou’s friendship and Zuzana and Mik’s relationship, they’re too cute!
Ziri – A chimaera, one of my favourites. He is seriously such a cinnamon roll.

Overall: I freaking love these books, they have definitely become an all-time favourite. I look forward to rereading them in the future. I also cannot wait to read more by Laini Taylor, I will be picking up the novella for this series; Night of Cake and Puppets and Strange the Dreamer for sure!
I highly recommend these books to anyone wanting an Urban Fantasy with a bit of romance.

Book Ratings:
Daughter of Smoke and Bone: 4.5/5 Stars
Days of Blood and Starlight: 5/5 Stars
Dreams of Gods and Monsters: 4/5 Stars

Overall Series Rating: 4.5 / 5 Stars

Book Series I Want To Continue in 2018

This is going to be a list of excuses, basically.
These are some series/trilogies I would like to continue in 2018. I do prefer to binge read series’ from start to finish but for some reason, I didn’t do it with these books. Most of these series I started in 2017 and just never bothered to pick up the rest, despite actually wanting to continue. 2018 is the year I change that!

Lord of The Rings by J.R.R.Tolkien
I read the first two books in 2016 and never continued onto Return of The King. Although I wasn’t *that* keen on the first two, I still want to read the last one just so I can say I have finished the series. I always want to pick up The Hobbit this year, unlike Lord of the Rings, I haven’t been spoiled for anything that happens in this book and I don’t know any major plotlines.

The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson
Again, wasn’t super in love with the first book but everyone raves about this series and Brandon Sanderson is my favourite author so I’m willing to give Words of Radiance a go. Hoping to get around to this soon, but not super worried as these books take a while to come out!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
I am loving these books so far and cannot wait to see where the story goes! Days of Blood and Starlight was my first read of 2018, I LOVED it.  I am also hoping to get to Dreams of Gods and Monsters really, really soon! And hopefully the novella Night of Cake & Puppets this year. I am still looking for the UK hardback of Dreams of Gods and Monsters to match the first two but I can’t seem to find it anywhere for a decent price. 😦

Summoner by Taran Matharu
I read the first book (The Novice) back in June and I enjoyed reading it, it’s a decent YA fantasy and the first book was a good set up for the rest of the books. Hoping to read at least the next book this year (hopefully more).

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
I read the first two books in 2017, I enjoyed them and want to continue reading them as the last book is out this year. I just picked up King’s Cage, hoping to finish it soon, I am not enjoying this one as much as I thought I would. I will continue the series as I have made it this far, I might as well finish the series and read War Storm when that comes out.

Let me know any series you will be continuing in 2018, I’d love to know!
Have a great weekend!
