Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.
This is the first YA book I’ve read by Sanderson and the only non-Cosmere book I’ve read. I LOVE his fantasy books so much, they’re my favourite books ever. I was so excited when Skyward was announced because I love YA + Sci-fi + Sanderson. I don’t know why it took me so long to read this!
The beginning started off really well – I was interested and intrigued from the start. Sanderson is really good at creating interesting and gripping concepts/ideas.
The middle – It got a bit slow and repetitive. I found myself getting bored through most of the middle chunk. It definitely picked up again towards the end.
Ending – As with every Sanderson novel: the ending was SO GOOD. He really knows how to end a novel perfectly: the story is wrapped up but it leaves you wanting more and to continue.
Is it as good as his other books? No. I think adult fantasy is his strong point but he did YA sci-fi really well. I’ll definitely be continuing this series!
Spensa: I really liked Spensa, she was different from the usual YA heroine. She was quirky and weird – which I really enjoyed! I know a lot of people didn’t take to her right away but I definitely did. I thought her personality and attitude were really refreshing to see.
Most of them were really meh. I did really like the AI system though. It was so cool!! Also loved Doomslug; I love companions/pets in books!
I really didn’t like ‘Jerkface’ and I seriously hope no romance happens between him and Spensa. It would be seriously unnecessary.
I’m hoping for more development with friendships in the next book!
