Totally Didn’t Book Tag

Hello Everyone! Welcome back or welcome if you’re new!
Today, as you can see by the title, I am doing the ‘Totally Didn’t’ Book tag! So I will be throwing some shade and spilling some tea!
I recently saw this tag on Emily’s BookTube (BookswithEmilyFox) channel and I thought it would be a fun one to do!

1. Totally didn’t need to have a sequel/sequels.

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
I felt like the story should’ve ended with the first book. It didn’t need to be continued. It was perfectly wrapped up and I didn’t need to know what happened next. The second book is seriously god awful – it was really really unnecessary. The third book was okay, much better than the second but, again, unnecessary.

2. Totally didn’t need to have more than one point of view.

Hmm… This is a hard one, I like multiple POV’s and I’ve never noticed if a book would’ve worked better from one POV. The only thing I could think of was maybe Strange the Dreamer? Only because I preferred Lanzo’s perspective over Sarai’s.

3. Totally didn’t need to change cover art through the middle of a series.

I am actually blessed: none of the books I own has changed the cover art mid-series! All my covers match (for now) so unless any upcoming books decide to change the cover, I’m good!

4. Totally didn’t need a love triangle.

Oh my god, so many. There are so many unnecessary love triangles – that are usually poorly done too. Love triangles aren’t my thing but it’s tolerable if done right but most are just cringeworthy.

Couple of examples:
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi – Was this really necessary? No. It wasn’t exactly well done either.
Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas – This one isn’t horrendous, it was just uncalled for. I never liked Celaena and Chaol (I secretly always wanted it to be Dorian) but there love triangle never even went anywhere. It was completely pointless.

5. Totally didn’t need this book to be included in this series.

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas
All I can say for this is: why. Just WHY.
(if you’ve read it, you probably understand)

6. Totally didn’t need a cliffhanger.

Does any book really need a cliffhanger? The story should be interesting enough that you want to continue, not just because something was left unsolved at the end. I hate the feeling of incomplete stories. Cliffhanger endings aren’t satisfying – they’re just kind of annoying.
Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas – This was super annoying because then we ended up having Tower of Dawn before knowing what happens to Aelin! It was so annoying – yes, it makes you want to buy the next book but when the next book isn’t even the one you want, it’s doubly annoying.

7. Totally didn’t need to have just one point of view.

A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy by Sarah J Maas
Feyre gets a bit tiring to read at times. I would’ve loved some other POV’s in this series, particularly Lucien and Rhysand. I’d also love some POVs of the inner circle. But it’s just Feyre. *sigh*

8. Totally didn’t need that much hype.

The Cruel Prince + The Wicked King by Holly Black
These books just aren’t worth the hype, in my opinion.
They aren’t BAD but there’s nothing outstanding or amazing about them.

9. Totally didn’t need a relative book reference. (Eg, For example: Hunger Games fan would love Divergent.)

Literally everything said to be comparable to The Handmaid’s Tale never lives up to or comes even remotely close to The Handmaid’s Tale, such as:
Vox by Christina Dalcher
The Power by Naomi Alderman

10. Totally didn’t deserve my time.

I have loads for this! It kinda sad I finished all these, I didn’t use to like not finishing books so I’d force myself through them.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Tess of the D’Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy
The Foxhole Court by Nora Sakavic
1984 by George Orwell
King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard

  1. Haha love your answers… I always wanted Celaena and Dorian too and I’m still salty about it 😣😣😣
I see how distressing the cliffhanger of EoS must have been.. I binge read the whole series after the release of Tower of Dawn, so my experience is a bit different but the wait for answers was definitely excruciating 😬😬

    1. Thanks!
Yas Dorian and Celaena were so cute! Could’ve been such a power couple!
I definitely shouldve waited for all the books to come out to binge them. I thought I had then SJM came out with ToD instead 😂😂

  2. Such a fun tag! I agree with you on almost all of it! “After You” was okay but like you said it was so unnecessary!! Omg! I need Rhysand’s POV in my life and I totally agree with you on the love triangle in Throne of Glass, again unnecessary. I wanted Dorian and Aelin to be the endgame, they make so much sense together, especially after they came to know their powers!! Rowan who?

  3. It made you sad you didn’t enjoy Foxhole Court!! Then again, that series is definitely NOT for everyone. And Cruel Prince was a bit letdown for me as well. DEFINITELY over-hyped. However, I never understood why people think there’s a love triangle in ToG? Chaol was there for awhile, but then they didn’t fit, he was just there while Celaena needed support. Dorian was never a true love interest, just a friend. He may have felt differently, but even if there were a few kisses, those were just rebound after Celaena and we knew that. There was no real “l love you’s” going on, just affection as friends.

    1. I guess it depends how you read it, everyone’s going to have a different interpretation.
I never thought Dorian’s intentions/feelings for Celaena were strictly platonic, he definitely felt more for her, in my eyes. It’s definitely hinted at by Chaol too, when he warns Dorian about seeing her. IMO Dorian definitely fell for Celaena and it was there to cause tension between him and Chaol, since Chaol ends up with her🤷🏽‍♀️
