Review/Discussion: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Okay, so I’m hugely late to the Shatter Me bandwagon, but I have heard nothing but great things about this series. I’ve been really in the mood for sci-fi and dystopian since reading The Handmaid’s Tale (review here) and Hold Back the Stars (review here). I saw Shatter Me on Netgalley, requested it and got accepted! Thank you NetGalley!

Plot: It started off well, I was very intrigued by Juliette and her situation as well as the world. The parts with her in a cell were interesting, I kept me interested, wondering why she’s in there and where the story would lead.
The world is interesting, typical dystopian – everything seems to have gone to crap, I wish there was more about the world. Hopefully the next book… The serious lack of world-building is what let this book down, to be honest.
The story picks up when Adam arrives, he was interesting and something did feel off about him at that point…
Not a lot was going on but I was still kind of hooked? I read this pretty quickly and it was an easy read.
The ending definitely left me wanting more! I am so interested in learning more about other people with abilities, it’s very ‘X-Men’, which I’m not complaining about, I love the X-Men films!
The writing style was really lovely, it was so easy to read and I flew through it. Tahereh really is a talented writer, I will definitely be reading more from her!

Juliette –
Okay so, as mentioned above, this book reminds me of X-Men, Juliette is basically a ripoff Rogue. They both can’t touch anyone because she’ll kill them/ seriously injure them.
She okay, she’s an alright protagonist. So far I neither love nor hate her. Hopefully, she’ll get more character development in the other books. I do sympathise with Juliette, she’s been shunned for basically her whole life and label as a freak. She deserves happiness!
Adam  – Aw, Adam. He’s so sweet. I loved his relationship with his little brother, so adorable! But there is definitely something off about him… I’m intrigued to see where his character development goes. It is already a well-known fact everyone in the fandom hates Adam and love Warner…
Warner – I HATED Warner, he’s such an asshole. I have already been spoiled for this series, I know he and Juliette end up together or something?? He must get a personality transplant because in this book he is unbearable. He’s also obsessed with Juliette, it’s unsettling, he’s so creepy! I definitely want to know what happens to him…

Overall: I enjoyed it. Despite being already a little spoiled, it didn’t bother me too much and in fact, I’m very much interested in how the event leads up to the parts I was spoiled. I will definitely be continuing with the next book, which I am contemplating picking up really soon…
*Since I wrote this I have picked up and finished the second book I will be reviewing that soon too!

Rating: 3.5 Stars

*I received this book from NetGalley for free in exchange for an honest review.
